Visits 2023

Upton-by-Chester Historical Walking Tour

Tuesday, 25 April, 2.00-4.00pm, meeting outside Upton Library, Wealstone Lane, CH2 1HB, parking available. Max. 14 people. £5 per head.

Led by local historian and writer, Chris Fozzard, this is a gentle walking tour around the attractive village of Upton-by-Chester. There will be stops at places of historical interest and curiosity, including a rare opportunity to browse the interior of the Victorian parish church with stained glass by Charles Eamer Kempe.

Manley Knoll Arts and Crafts Gardens

Monday, 15 May, meeting at Manley Knoll House at 2pm (to be confirmed), Manley Road, Frodsham, WA6 9DX. Max. 16. £10 includes light refreshments.

Manley Knoll, a small country house and gardens north of the village of Manley in Cheshire, was constructed in the early 1900s. Since the house itself is not open to the public, this is a visit to its extensive gardens, also in the Arts and Crafts style. Much of the garden was lost for many years prior to its purchase by the Timpson family, which uncovered its structure.

Introduction by one of the gardeners, Q & A opportunities, free roaming. Banks of rhododendron and azaleas frame a far-reaching view of the Cheshire Plain and there is a magical quarry/folly garden with waterfall and woodland walks.

The Rows of Chester: people and buildings

Tuesday, 4 July 2023, meeting in the foyer of the Grosvenor Museum, Grosvenor Street, Chester at 2.30pm. Max. 16. Free of charge.

A walk based around the historic Rows of Chester led by Julie Edwards, Archaeological Officer, West Cheshire Museums, who will talk about the archaeological, building and historical evidence for the development of the city centre and the changes in its occupants and functions over time.

Saughall Historical Walking Tour

Tuesday, 12 September, 10.30-12.30am. Meet in car park of Saughall Methodist Church, Church Road, CH1 6EN. £5 (proceeds to the Hospice of the Good Shepherd).

Led by retired academic and historian Dennis Holman, the first part of the visit will focus on the early and more recent history of Saughall, including the social history.  A second part (which those with mobility issues are free to opt out of) involves a 20-minute walk across a field and through a pretty wood to the site of Shotwick Castle (11th century).

The Greyhound Inn (pre-1561) in Seahill Road sits nicely between the two parts of the walk and may be of interest for lunch reservations (01244 881122).
